Sumatra is the largest island entirely in Indonesia and the sixth-largest island in the world. Known for its rich biodiversity, active volcanoes, dense rainforests, and diverse cultures, Sumatra is both ecologically significant and culturally fascinating.

  • Part of the Sunda Arc, a highly active tectonic and volcanic region
  • Features the Barisan Mountains, home to dozens of volcanoes including:
    • Mount Kerinci (3,805 m) – highest volcano in Indonesia
    • Mount Sinabung and Mount Marapi – active volcanoes
  • Also contains vast peatlands, swamps, and tropical rainforests

🌿 Biodiversity

Sumatra is part of the Sundaland biodiversity hotspot, but faces severe deforestation:

These form part of the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra (UNESCO site).

Sumatra is home to a rich tapestry of ethnic groups, including:

  • Acehnese (Aceh)
